Neck Pain: Solving the Problem from the Root at Prime Rehabilitation Services

Do you often feel stiffness or soreness in your neck, or even find it difficult to turn your head? In this era dominated by 3C devices, neck pain has become a common problem for many. Whether it’s from prolonged hours in front of a computer or unconsciously becoming a "smartphone hunchback," your cervical spine may be under extra pressure.

At Prime Rehabilitation Services, we believe that treatment shouldn't just focus on the symptoms. We are dedicated to finding the root cause of your pain and creating a personalized rehabilitation plan to help you solve the problem from its source and improve your overall quality of life.

What is Neck Pain?

Simply put, neck pain refers to discomfort, soreness, stiffness, or restricted movement in your cervical spine and surrounding tissues, such as muscles, ligaments, and nerves.

The cervical spine is the crucial bridge connecting your head to your body. It consists of seven vertebrae (from C1 to C7) that support the head's average weight of about five kilograms and allow for multi-directional movement. C1 (the atlas) and C2 (the axis) are particularly important, as they work together to give the head its wide range of rotation. Between the vertebrae, flexible intervertebral discs act as cushions, while ligaments and muscles provide stability and allow for free head movement. When these complex and delicate tissues are stressed, damaged, or degenerate for various reasons, pain will follow.

Neck pain can be classified into the following types based on its nature and cause:

急性頸痛 (Acute Neck Pain)

Acute Neck Pain

This usually appears over a short period, with more severe pain, often caused by muscle strains, sprains, or minor external trauma. It generally resolves on its own within a few days to a few weeks.

慢性頸痛 (Chronic Neck Pain)

Cervical Spondylosis

This is a degenerative condition of the cervical spine caused by aging. The intervertebral discs thin and bone spurs may form, potentially compressing nerves or the spinal cord, leading to pain, numbness, or weakness.

揮鞭式創傷 (Whiplash)

Whiplash

This typically occurs in accidents, such as car crashes, where the head is violently and rapidly whipped back and forth. This can damage neck muscles, ligaments, and intervertebral discs, causing severe acute pain.

Common Causes and Symptoms of Neck Pain

Neck pain has many causes, with the most common ones including:

  • Poor Posture: This includes the "tech neck" from prolonged looking down, or slouching and having a low computer screen at work, which all place unnecessary stress on the cervical spine.
  • Muscle Strain: High stress, lack of sleep, or overuse of neck muscles can cause them to become tight and stiff, leading to pain.
  • External Trauma: For example, "whiplash" from a traffic accident, which can lead to acute damage to neck ligaments and muscles.
  • Degenerative Conditions: With age, the intervertebral discs and joints of the cervical spine naturally degenerate. This can form bone spurs or a herniated disc, which may then compress a nerve.

Common symptoms of neck pain include:

  • Soreness and stiffness in the neck or shoulders.
  • Restricted movement or a "cracking" sound when moving the neck.
  • Tension headaches, especially those that extend from the back of the neck to the back of the head.
  • In severe cases, if a nerve is compressed, it may be accompanied by numbness, tingling, or weakness in the hands.

Neck Pain Treatment and Rehabilitation

  • Manual Therapy:Using professional joint mobilization and soft tissue release techniques to restore normal mobility to the cervical joints and relax tight muscles.
  • Instrumental Therapy:Using advancedultrasound, electrotherapy, oror shockwave therapyto accelerate tissue repair and reduce inflammation and pain.
  • Therapeutic Exercise:This is the most important part of our treatment plan..A physiotherapist will design a personalized exercise program for you to strengthen the muscles around the neck, fundamentally improve your posture, and prevent future injuries.

1. Stretching Exercises

Side Neck Stretch

Sit or stand up straight. Slowly bring your right ear toward your right shoulder until you feel a gentle stretch on the left side of your neck. You can use your right hand to gently apply pressure to assist. Hold for 15-30 seconds, then switch sides. Repeat 2-3 times per side.

Chin Tuck

Sit up straight and pull your chin back, imagining you are creating a double chin at the back of your neck. Keep your neck straight and do not look down. Hold for 5-10 seconds, then relax. Repeat 10-15 times.

2. Strengthening Exercises

Isometric Neck Contraction

Place your palm on your forehead. Push your head forward while your neck muscles resist, keeping your head still. Hold for 5-10 seconds. Then, place your palm on the back of your head and push backward while your neck muscles resist. Repeat 5-8 times for both forward and backward pushes.

Scapular Retraction

Sit up straight and pull your shoulder blades together toward your spine, as if you are trying to "pinch" something between them. Hold for 5-10 seconds, then relax. Repeat 10-15 times.

Important Note: If you experience increased pain while performing any exercise, stop immediately and seek assistance from a professional physiotherapist.
